Etymology[edit]

Old East Slavic Володимѣръ (Volodiměrŭ), from володѣти (voloděti) + мѣръ (měrŭ, great), see Proto-Slavic *volděti and *měra. Compare to Russian Владимир (Vladimir) which is not inherited from Old East Slavic, but rather borrowed from Old Church Slavonic Владимѣръ (Vladiměrŭ). Synchronicaly equivalent to волод (volod) +‎ міра (mira)
